The Wolves Theatrical Production

This project brief consisted of designing a promotional poster for an upcoming theatrical production of The Wolves by Cal Poly Pomona’s Department of Theatre and New Dance.

Bernardo Solano’s priorities were to have the posters be eye-catching around campus and to set the tone of the play. My goal was to invite viewers to this production with an accurate expectation of the tone and themes of The Wolves play. As the play had not been cast nor directed at this time, it was important to avoid likenesses of any characters.

The Wolves Concept

The Wolves is a girls soccer team in the 2016 play written by Sarah DeLappe. The play is set in their locker room where the audience is privy to the girls’ lives and struggles through snippets of locker room talk before practice. The 9 young soccer players are only known as their jersey numbers. My concept is to give the viewer visual glimpses into the lives of the characters just as the play gives the audience snippets of conversations.

The Wolves Design

The abstracted open locker achieved my goal of giving the viewer visual glimpses into the lives of these characters. The 8 pillars not only ground the composition, but also correspond to the number of girls on the team, with an empty space to nod to the loss of the 9th. Number 14’s crumpled jersey hints at her fate within the plot.

I used analogous colours to provide a team atmosphere, and the red to reflect the fieriness of these characters. I used halftone texture to give depth as well as a nostalgic atmosphere since this play is set in junior high. The black more grungy texture of the items offsets the warmth to reflect the struggles each character goes through.
